Darren Moore

Darren Moore is the Principal Trumpet of the Irish Symphony Orchestra and has been recognised for his educational outreach work.

Darren Moore has played the trumpet since the age of four when he used to take a taxi after school to play in his mum's high school wind band. As a kid he loved listening to recordings of Louis Armstrong, Humphrey Lyttelton, and Wynton Marsalis.

At secondary school Darren played in an 8-piece traditional jazz band that his music teacher Mr Hall led each Thursday. It was in this band that he learned the importance of musical interaction, focused listening, and making the dots come off the page. As well as this his dad drove him to lessons with Tom Rainer (our very own Musical Director). In a way things have come full circle as Darren is now the Principal of the National Symphony Orchestra Ireland, the orchestra in which Tom himself used to work.

After getting a BMus from Guildhall, a Masters from the Royal Academy of Music in London, and a second Masters in historical music at Brussels Conservatoire, Darren worked as a freelancer. He has performed with many amazing groups including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, The Sixteen, BBC Philharmonic, as well as the Chamber Orchestra of Europe with whom he has played at the Luzern Festival under Sir Bernard Haitink, for Yannick Nezet-Seguin's recording of the Beethoven Symphonies, and on tours to Finland, Germany, and South Korea.

In 2017, the Worshipful Company of Musicians awarded Darren for his outreach work across schools in London. Today he continues to lead workshops in Dublin for the Irish Baroque Orchestra, having previously taught trumpet at the Cork School of Music.

As well as being the Principal Trumpet of National Symphony Orchestra Ireland, Darren is a keen skier, a proud father, and an amateur bagpipe player.
