The Brass Academy runs courses for brass players aged 8-18 of Grade 1 standard to Grade 8 and beyond.  The Workshop, an advanced course for those that have passed their Grade 8 or Diploma, takes place as part of our Summer Courses.
Our courses are five days long and can be attended on a residential or day basis, with fun evening activities for those staying overnight.  Our tutors are exceptional professional brass musicians, and as well as the music sessions, there is a daily two hour sports session.

We run exceptional courses for brass players

  • Our courses are run specifically for brass players, and focus on their particular requirements.
  • Our brass tutors are outstanding brass players, who also possess a great aptitude for teaching all ages.  They include Philippe Schartz (Principal Trumpet of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales), Paul Beniston (Principal Trumpet of the London Philharmonic Orchestra), Tom Rainer (Music Director of the Brass Academy and Director of Music at Aldro School), Christian Jones (Principal Bass Trombone of Opera North), Simon Morgan (horn player at The Lion King in London), Pete Smith (Principal Tuba of the Philharmonia Orchestra) and Lee Tsarmaklis (Principal Tuba of the London Philharmonic Orchestra).
  • Each afternoon, the children take part in two hours of organised sport and activities.
  • The Workshop is our advanced course-within-a-course run during our Summer Courses and is specifically for those who have passed their Grade 8 or Diploma.  It provides a great forum to work with those of a similar high standard while being tutored by world class musicians.
  • There is a fun and varied programme of evening activities for those staying on a residential basis.
  • Our courses are solely for brass players, which means that there is a lot more time spent playing and a lot less time spent counting endless bars of rests than they would get on an orchestral course.

The tutors at The Brass Academy are some of the finest performers in the UK, as soloists and with the country's leading orchestras.

  • They are experienced in working with students of all ages, and combine immense technical knowledge and musicianship with the ability and enthusiasm to pass on their skills to the next generation of brass musicians.
  • Most of our tutors have worked on with us on many previous courses, and we are delighted they are all keen to continue to work with us.
  • It takes a very special person to become a Brass Academy tutor: many very talented professionals do not make great teachers: and many excellent teachers are not good enough performers to have made it to the top of the music industry.  At the Brass Academy, our tutors are at the top of their profession and are brilliant teachers!  They are fundamental to why our courses are so highly regarded, and it is their drive, professionalism and skill at getting the very best out of the children on our courses that makes the Brass Academy courses so outstanding.
