The Brass Academy runs courses for brass players aged 8-18 of Grade 1 standard to Grade 8 and beyond.  The Percussion Academy, for percussionists aged 8-18 of Grade 3 standard and above, will take place alongside our 2017 Easter and Summer Courses at Purcell.  The Workshop, an advanced course for those that have passed their Grade 8 or Diploma, takes place as part of our 2017 Summer Courses.

Our courses are five days long and can be attended on a residential or day basis.  Our tutors are exceptional professional brass musicians, and as well as the music sessions, there is a daily two hour sports session.

We run exceptional courses for brass players and percussionists

  • Our courses are run specifically for brass and percussion players, and focus on their particular requirements.
  • Our brass tutors are outstanding brass players, who also possess a great aptitude for teaching all ages.  They include Philippe Schartz (Principal Trumpet of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales), Paul Beniston (Principal Trumpet of the London Philharmonic Orchestra), Tom Rainer (Music Director of the Brass Academy and Director of Music at Aldro School), Christian Jones (Principal Bass Trombone of Opera North), Roger Argente (Principal Bass Trombone of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra), Lyndon Meredith (Principal Trombone with the London Philharmonic Orchestra), Simon Morgan (horn player at The Lion King in London), Pete Smith (Principal Tuba of the Philharmonia Orchestra) and Dan Trodden (Principal Tuba of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales).
  • The Percussion Academy will run alongside our Easter and Summer brass courses at Purcell School under the expert eye of Mick Doran (Principal Percussionist of the English National Opera).
  • Each afternoon, the children take part in two hours of organised sport and activities.
  • The Workshop is our advanced course-within-a-course run during our Summer Courses specifically for those who have passed their Grade 8.  It provides a great forum to work with those of a similar high standard while being tutored by world class musicians.
  • There is a fun and varied programme of evening activities for those staying on a residential basis.
  • Being courses solely for brass or percussion players means that there is a lot more time spent playing and a lot less time spent counting endless bars of rests than players of these instruments would get on an orchestral course.

The tutors at The Brass Academy are some of the finest performers in the UK, as soloists and with the country's leading orchestras.

  • They are experienced in working with students of all ages, and combine immense technical knowledge and musicianship with the ability and enthusiasm to pass on their skills to the next generation of brass musicians.
  • Many of our tutors have worked on some or all of our previous courses, and we are delighted they are all keen to continue to work with us.
