The Percussion Academy
The Percussion Academy is a specialist course for percussionists aged 8-18 of Grade 3 standard and above. It will run alongside the Brass Academy's Easter and Summer Courses for brass players at the Purcell School, Bushey, Hertfordshire. Easter Course dates are 3 - 7 April 2017 and Summer Course dates are 21 - 25 August 2017. (NB The Percussion Academy will not be taking place on the Summer Course at Yehudi Menuhin School.) Day and residential places are available.
The Percussion Academy will be led by Mick Doran, principal percussionist at the English National Opera: Mick has worked extensively with percussionists of all ages and abilities, and will bring his boundless enthusiasm, professional expertise, technical knowledge and meticulous attention to detail to every rehearsal. Various guest artists will be involved in 2017: in 2016 we were delighted to welcome Simone Rebello and Steve White each for a day at the Percussion Academy.
The course will encompass classes and tuition on a broad range of styles from across the world of percussion on a variety of instruments including tuned and untuned percussion, timpani, drum kit and world percussion.
At the Percussion Academy there will be ensemble work, masterclasses and solo work, and each day there will be an in-depth exploration of a specific area of performance. There will be opportunities for solo and group performances, as well as the chance to play with our brass colleagues.
Playing and improvisation techniques will be covered and all instruments will be provided at the course. However, if students would like to bring their own, they are most welcome to do so. Participants will be expected to bring their own mallets, sticks and a practice pad.Percussion Academy will share the sprit of the Brass Academy in achieving great musical improvement while having a good time.
